ArIAlogo

                         ArIA - Il centro di ricerca delle Aree Interne e gli Appennini (ArIA), inaugurato il (22 Aprile 2016) e con sede a Campobasso, mira allo sviluppo e alla conservazione delle Aree Interne con particolare riferimento ai paesaggi rurali e forestali ed alle problematiche territoriali, incluse quelle storiche, istituzionali, giuridico-economiche e di pianificazione territoriale, attraverso la messa a punto di modelli operativi integrati e finalizzati alle peculiarità dei contesti regionali italiani. ArIA rappresenta un polo di studio, ricerca e innovazione, che grazie ad una lettura scientifica, innovativa e multidisciplinare dei fenomeni, fornisce supporto alla società civile e agli organi politici e tecnici delle amministrazioni contribuendo alla definizione degli strumenti di governance e policy territoriale.

AgriCLASS - This project is part of a programme to develop the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). It will deliver a Sectorial Information System (SIS) for the European Agricultural sector, free to access as a public service. Initially this will be a proof of concept, demonstrating climate impact on three permanent crops: vines, olives and forest in certain locations, and presenting these results in their socio-economic context. The system is intended to evolve in future, to support an on-going operational service, extending to other crops and regions across Europe.
  
ECUAFLUX - The project will contribute to understand the role that different elements of the natural ecosystem play in the carbon cycle in three basins of Andean mountains with some common features: they do not receive external water supplies (except for rain) and present different concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon in lakes. Stands of Polylepis reticulata —an Andean tree which lives in extreme conditions and is one of the main agents involved in carbon fixation— make up the characteristic vegetation of the basins studied in El Cajas National Park, which has a rich lake ecosystem in a surface of 29000 hectares. The project will study carbon flux and its relationship with vegetation, sun and water bodies in three experimental basins of Andean mountains. It will provide valuable information to improve water management in headwater catchments that supply the city of Cuenca, a city of 350,000 inhabitants which is the third most populated city in Ecuador after Guayaquil and Quito.
  
COST Action (CA15226) Climate-Smart Forestry in Mountain Regions - Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) integrates the three-dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental), and aims at sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes, adapting and building resilience to climate change (CC), and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. CLIMO wants to translate the CSA concept for a Climate-Smart Forestry (CSF). Three main pillars will be considered: improve livelihood of mountain inhabitants by sustainably increasing forest ecosystem services (ES); enhance the adaptation and resilience to CC of mountain forests; optimise the CC mitigation potential of mountain forests, focusing on the most efficient and cost-effective mitigation options and capitalising on adaptation-mitigation synergies. The main objective is to define CSF in the European context, which will require the identification of key silvicultural characteristics and the harmonisation of CSF in mountain areas to create a common knowledge at European level. The “smartness” of the European forests will be defined according to the sustainability of forest management and mitigation potential. The ““smartness”” will be defined on the basis of measurable criteria and a checklist of parameters of “smartness” for mountain forests will be proposed. Experimental forest sites with available data to quantify the “smartness” of mountain forests will be identified to build a European Smart Forest Network (ESFONET). A feasibility study for the development of a cyber-technology able to quickly transfer data from monitoring sites to stakeholders will be developed. Innovative schemes of payment for ES (PES) will be developed to shift the objective of mountain forest management from the production of timber to the production of ES. CROPSTRESS System performance of non-food crops to drought stress: development of a plant ideotype - The project will be developed for addressing innovative mitigation strategies in the agricultural sector with energy crops grown in water limitation. Activities will be conducted for the assessment of a non-food crop (Arundo donax) suitable to maintain biomass production and quality under conditions of growth constraints, marginal environments unsuitable for high yielding plants, while useful for the bio-based industries (for bioenergy, biofuel and bioproducts). The basic objective of the proposal is the development of empirical and model knowledge to design a plant prototype or ideotype suitable to grow in abiotic constraints, such as drought and salinity. Phenomics, namely biochemical, physiological and molecular mechanisms, will be triggered. Moreover the epigenomic and proteomic outputs connected with the metabolic patterns and functional genomics will be explored. The crop type that CROPSTRESS targets is a perennial C3 grass (Arundo), therefore, likely to have a lower carbon footprint than many food crops when used for bioenergy. D.A.CH stands for Germany (D, Deutschland), Austria (A) and Switzerland (CH, Confoederatio Helvetica). The Lead Agency Agreement was signed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) in May 2008. Under this agreement, cross-border applications submitted by researchers from two or all three of these countries need only be evaluated by the Lead Agency. The project parts performed in each of the three countries must be interdependent and complementary.

Progetto FRESH LIFE; “Demonstrating Remote Sensing integration in sustainable forest management”, LIFE Programme priority area: Environment and Resource Efficiency - LIFE14 ENV/IT/000414
Il progetto ha lo scopo di dimostrare che l'uso di informazioni avanzate telerilevate integrate con i dati più tradizionali di misurazioni sul campo possono essere oggi facilmente integrati per creare livelli spaziali avanzati in grado di supportare i gestori forestali nel raggiungimento degli obiettivi di gestione sostenibile delle foreste.
Obiettivi:
• Dimostrare la possibilità di integrare i dati disponibili da inventari forestale con dati telerilevati per sostenere l'attuazione di approcci di gestione sostenibile e il miglioramento della protezione degli ecosistemi forestali.
• Stima spazialmente definita in accordo con gli indicatori di Forest Europe al fine di estendere l'utilità di programmi di monitoraggio delle foreste a livello regionale.
• Produrre set di dati che possano essere facilmente implementati nella European Forest Data Centre (EFDAC) e più tardi nel sistema informativo forestale per l'Europa (FISE) della Commissione Europea.
Il progetto si svilupperà su 3 regioni italiane (Toscana, Lazio e Molise).
