The Forestry Labs develop research activities referred to ecology, monitoring and management of forest ecosystems and urban forests. We quantify and monitor the response of trees and the resilience of forests to changes in disturbance regimes, stand dynamics, and land use. We apply this knowledge for the development of sustainable forest management practices and the provision of vital forest ecosystem services, and to establish a framework for the formulation of optimal forest planning.
We believe that forest management and planning are fundamental for the preservation or restoration of forest functions and services. This requires a comprehensive understanding of forest ecosystem functioning to support forestry technologies for adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. Our mission is to contribute to this objective by capacity-building through PhD and postdoc projects, and by providing technical advice and raising public awareness on the importance of forests for society.
