Global Ecology Lab
The Global Ecology Laboratory (DIVISION: NATURE, ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTS) of the DiBT Department of the University of Molise is proposed as a research laboratory specialized in dendrochronological studies by analyzing the size of the annual circles of trees observed on carrots or samples wooden. These studies allow to investigate possible correlations between the annual growth of the trees being studied and the climatic variations, anomalous climatic events (storms, snowfalls, droughts …), natural events (volcanic eruption …) and anthropic interventions (management factors of the forest …) .
Another research topic concerns the study of the decomposition dynamics of dead wood in forests through cross-dating activities that allow the determination of the year of death of the trees observed through the crossing between the curves of dead trees and those of trees. These studies allow us to analyze the decomposition dynamics of dead wood, a fundamental component for biodiversity, and to correlate it with the forest typology and climate zone. Another research topic is the estimation of the potential use of woody biomass for energy use of national forests.
Through GIS activities on map data of forest coverings, land use, road conditions and other factors, and comparing with domestic consumption data, it is possible to identify potential energy basins in a perspective of sustainable use of the resource.
In addition, the laboratory aims to enhance the Molise forest species through the technological characterization of wood and the incentive for technological use in the furnishing and construction sector. Finally, the laboratory carries out collection, identification and classification activities of wood samples for the purpose of scientific dissemination through a space dedicated to the exhibition of these woods in the Xiloteca of the University of Molise.
