Research activities of the Forestry Labs are referred to ecology, monitoring and management of forest ecosystems and natural resources, mainly in the fields of forest management, forest inventory, biodiversity conservation, environmental pollution, tree physiology, ecosystem services, forest planning, wood biology, forest fires, land use, biogeochemical cycles, forest geomatics, and remote sensing.

The research mission is related to the quantification and monitoring of the response of ecosystems and their services to natural and human-induced changes. Our insights into disturbance effects on ecological processes are generated primarily by research on forests.

The multidisciplinary organisation of the team is aimed to address global change issues in mountain regions by planning integrated research strategies. The combined study of forest ecosystem function and structure is used to implement proactive management strategies to mitigate the influence of disturbances on processes controlling carbon, water and nutrient cycling.
